Stoked is an iPhone app made by Völundr Labs LLC ("we"). This page says what the app keeps on your phone, what leaves it, and who receives it.
The short version
- There's no account. We never ask for your name, email or phone number.
- Your track and your recorded days stay on your iPhone. Stoked never sends them to Völundr Labs.
- The map comes from Mapbox. Mapbox collects its own usage data, which you can turn off.
- Stoked sends us three small usage events, under a random id that isn't tied to you. One of them names a resort, usually the one you're at.
- No ads. Nothing is sold. Nothing is used to track you across other apps or websites.
What stays on your iPhone
- Location. Stoked uses your location, while the app is in use and while you're recording, to find the mountain you're on and to record your runs. The track is saved on your iPhone.
- Motion. Stoked uses motion data to tell runs from lift rides. It's used on your iPhone and isn't sent anywhere.
- Your recorded days and any edits you make to them.
- Crash and performance reports that iOS gives Stoked. The copies Stoked keeps leave your phone only if you share them yourself, from Settings → Export diagnostics.
- Your settings, such as units.
What Stoked sends us
Stoked sends three events to PostHog, an analytics service we use. Each one carries a random id that Stoked creates the first time it sends one. The id isn't your name, your Apple account or your device's identifier, and we have no way to link it to you.
- A recorded day ended: how many runs it had, the longest gap in recording, in minutes, and whether the day recorded cleanly.
- The answer for a resort was opened: which resort, and which kind of answer was shown. Stoked usually finds the resort from your location, so this shows roughly where you were that day.
- Crash or performance reports are waiting on the phone: how many. The reports themselves stay on your phone.
Each event also carries the time it happened. Apart from the resort in that one event, no event carries your location. Stoked tells PostHog not to look up a location from your connection, and our PostHog project discards IP addresses.
We use these events to see whether the app records days reliably and whether people use the answer. Nothing else.
Mapbox
The map in Stoked comes from Mapbox. To draw it, your iPhone downloads map data from Mapbox, the way any app with a map does.
Mapbox also collects usage data of its own. By Mapbox's description, that includes your precise and approximate location and a session id that changes every 24 hours. Mapbox says this data isn't linked to you and isn't used to track you. To turn it off, tap the (i) in the corner of the map and choose the telemetry option.
Mapbox's privacy policy: mapbox.com/legal/privacy.
TestFlight
While Stoked is in beta, Apple runs TestFlight. If you send feedback or a crash report through TestFlight, Apple passes it to us with whatever you included. Apple's own privacy policy covers TestFlight.
How long data is kept
- On your iPhone: until you delete it or delete the app.
- Events not yet sent wait on your iPhone until the next time the app opens with a connection, then are sent and deleted from the phone.
- At PostHog: 12 months.
Deleting your data, and saying no
- Everything on your iPhone: delete the app. That removes your recorded days, your reports and the random id.
- Events already sent: they carry no name or account, so we can't tell which are yours. Once you delete the app, no new events are sent under that id.
- Location and motion: turn them off at any time in the iPhone's Settings app, under Stoked. Stoked can't record without location.
- Mapbox's usage data: tap the (i) on the map.
Children
Stoked isn't made for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect anything from them.
Changes
If what Stoked collects changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
